In the Spotlight

The big buzz in nursing education is a new concept-based curriculum model.

This paradigm shift away from the traditional is picking up speed as more and more institutions investigate and aim to implement such an approach.

What is Concept-Based Learning?

The current model for the nursing curriculum follows a traditional organization.  Specific topics/fields are covered in great depth, often in isolation from the overall study of nursing.  For example, students taking a pediatric nursing course focus strictly on the nursing care of children with all of the standards, diseases, implications and considerations for that particular population group.  The new model, instead, teaches an overall concept first and then discusses its relevance to the various population groups and environments, especially those most encountered in the nursing profession.

"The new model teaches an overall concept first and then discusses its relevance to the various population groups and environments, especially those most encountered in the nursing profession."

Why Concept-Based Learning?

One of the main reasons for the shift to a concept-based model is content saturation.  An information explosion has resulted in overload and content redundancy in the curriculum.  Instructors feel they need to teach everything.  Students are overwhelmed and resort to memorization or compartmentalization of information.  A concept-based learning model alleviates the information overlap and fosters a better overall understanding for students.   The focus is shifted to the student through active learning and application.

The Pearson Health Science Solution

Pearson Health Science, in conjunction with the North Carolina Concept-Based Learning Editorial Board, has created the first concept-based learning solution to fill the need as many institutions undertake this new curriculum endeavor.  Nursing: A Concept-Based Approach to Learning will consist of a two volume text set plus a skills manual.  Volume I will cover topics involving clinical content referred to as the “individual domains”.  Volume II will cover non-clinical topics referred to as the “health care domains”.  As with our other products, student and instructor resources will be available.  Pearson Health Science takes the approach further with The Neighborhood (www.pearsonneighborhood.com), an online program featuring unfolding case studies to illustrate concepts in a virutal community.
